The WGRC has offered programming geared toward increasing diversity in political and civic engagement for more than a decade. In Spring 2018, with support from The American Association of University Women, the WGRC launched the IDEAL: Intentionally Diversifying Engagement and Leadership Series. The series will continue through the 2019-2020 school year and beyond. Our focus is on providing participants with inspiration and preparation for civic and political engagement.

Inspiration

Encouraging more diverse representation in political and civic engagement first requires that individuals from underrepresented demographics see and believe that success is possible. To this end, we host elected officials from underrepresented backgrounds. In Spring of 2018, we hosted Tuscaloosa City Councilor Raven Howard and Georgia State Representative Park Cannon. In October 2018, we hosted Virginia Delegate Danica Roem.

Preparation

In addition to inspiration, interested individuals must also prepare for civic and political endeavors. Through a partnership with The Center for American Women in Politics at Rutgers University, we are pleased to host Ready to Run workshops for UA students and community members.
