Ongoing Opportunities

Legendary Leaders (Training Required)

  • Trainings occur once a week during the fall semester; Visits to Skyland Elementary occur once a week during the spring semester 
  • Coordinated by Elizabeth Lester 
  • Description: In the Legendary Leaders Mentoring Program (LLMP), we spend ten weeks in the fall doing our mentorship training. This training addresses the program pillars of identity, leadership, strength and connection, but also the fundamentals of mentoring, and professional development opportunities. The training in the fall is there to help you learn about mentoring, but also to help you learn about yourself and the world around you. In the spring we go to Skyland Elementary School to work as mentors with 3rd- 5th grade students. 

Ambassadors (Training Required)

  • Multiple training opportunities each month, new members accepted at the beginning of each semester
  • Coordinated by Jackie Northrup
  • Description: The Women and Gender Resource Center Ambassadors (WGRC Ambassadors) are trained by professional staff members on the issues of interpersonal violence, victim’s rights, reporting options, and resources available to our campus community with a goal of promoting positive bystander behavior and building safe communities. 
  • What does a WGRC Ambassador do?  The WGRC Ambassadors give presentations to the campus community on a variety of topics related to interpersonal violence. These presentations may include but are not limited to: classes, student organizational meetings, and residence hall programs. As trusted peers, WGRC Ambassadors play a central role in raising awareness of interpersonal violence and educating others on how to support victims and survivors on campus. 

Greek Safe (Training Required)

  • Multiple training opportunities each month, new members accepted at the beginning of each semester
  • Coordinated by Jackie Northrup
  • Description: The WGRC Greek Safe program consists of Greek Peer Educators/Leaders from registered Panhellenic, IFC, NPHC, and UGC student organizations. WGRC Greek Safe members are trained by WGRC professional staff members on the issues of interpersonal violence with a goal of promoting positive bystander behavior and building safe communities. 
  • What do Greek Safe members do? As a trusted member of their organization, WGRC Greek Safe members serve as a uniquely positioned allies and resource within their chapter. They facilitate conversations within the chapter on interpersonal violence and connect members to campus and community resources. WGRC Greek Safe members play a vital role in supporting victims and survivors and raising awareness of interpersonal violence. 

Thrive Together Volunteer Events (Monthly)

  • Description: Modeled after the Alabama Model for Wellness, Thrive Together: Campus Wellness Action Series aims to provide monthly opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to engage in holistic well-being programs that helps them achieve their full potential.  
  • Focusing on a different dimension each month, the series features a variety of workshops, panels, and activities designed to address different aspects of well-being, such as mental health, physical fitness, emotional resilience, and social connectivity. Each month focuses on a unique dimension of wellness, offering practical tools and strategies for participants to enhance their overall quality of life and foster a supportive campus community. 

Occasional Opportunities

Spooky Science

  • Date and Time: October  
  • Coordinated by Elizabeth Lester 
  • Description: Spooky Science is an annual Halloween-themed community service event hosted by the Delta Initiative, an academic support program and living-learning community for women interested in exploring the historical significance and experiences of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Participants in this event will do “spooky” science experiments with elementary school-aged children.  

Chocolate Festival

  • Date and Time: The Friday afternoon of UA’s Family Weekend 
  • Coordinated by Debbie Fish 
  • Description: The Chocolate Festival promotes learning about campus-based health and wellness resources, while fostering and engaging relationships throughout the campus and community. The chocolate treats are provided by local eateries and caterers. In addition to delectable chocolates, the festival features a silent auction and family-friendly activities. Proceeds support the services and programs of the WGRC including free, confidential, and voluntary counseling and advocacy for survivors of interpersonal violence. 

Take Our Children to Work day

  • Date and Time: November  
  • Coordinated by Elizabeth Lester.  
  • Description: Take Our Children to Work Day is a national event that has been ongoing for over twenty years. The University of Alabama WGRC has hosted the event for the last six years and has recently been co-sponsored by The Professional Staff Assembly and Bama Dining.  Faculty, staff, and UA students who are parents are invited to bring their child (ages 6 – 12) to campus for a day of activities that exposed them to the opportunities for learning and growth available to them here at The University of Alabama. 

Federally Recognized Heritage and Awareness Months

  • Date and Time: Varies by month 
  • Coordinated by Kerrigan Clark – Black History Month, Body Appreciation Week, Hispanic Heritage Month, Asian American Heritage Month 
  • Coordinated by Elizabeth Lester – Women’s History Month and Native American Heritage Month 
  • Coordinated by Jackie Northrup – Dating and Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month  
  • Coordinated by Debbie Fish – Breast Cancer Awareness Month 
  • Description: Heritage and Awareness Months are dedicated periods throughout the year that celebrate and recognize the contributions, histories, and cultures of diverse communities. These months highlight significant events and provide opportunities for education and engagement with various communities and causes. At the Women and Gender Resource Center (WGRC), we observe these months through events, workshops, and presentations that emphasize holistic well-being. Volunteers can assist in preparing for these events, assisting at the events, and in other ways!
