The Women and Gender Resource Center has many services and opportunities to offer incoming students.

Counseling and Advocacy Services

One of the things we are best known for on campus is our free, confidential, and voluntary counseling and advocacy services for survivors of interpersonal violence. Interpersonal violence includes things like sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, abuse experienced in childhood, stalking, sexual harassment, and sexual exploitation. These services are available to students, faculty, staff, and anyone victimized on our campus. Short-term services are also available to friends and family of UA students who are affected by the interpersonal violence faced by their student.

Education and Leadership Opportunities

We also offer leadership opportunities for students who are passionate about helping survivors of interpersonal violence. Our WGRC Ambassadors are trained to provide presentations and other information to peers about interpersonal violence dynamics, victims’ rights, reporting options, and campus and community-based resources for survivors. Our WGRC Safe Sisters serve a similar function but focus on supporting fellow members of their Greek Letter Organizations. Registration is open for both peer leader programs.

For students looking to make a difference in the larger Tuscaloosa community, we have two gender-based mentoring programs. WGRC staff members train UA student volunteers in the Fall and pair them with 3rd-5th grade “littles” in the Spring as part of a local elementary school’s after school program. The program offers group activities once a week.

New this Fall, the WGRC is introducing our Thrive Together: Campus Wellness Action Series. The series includes monthly sessions in which participants learn about a dimension of the Alabama model of Health and Wellness and complete a service or action to promote campus or community health and wellbeing.

Other Ways to Engage with and Support the WGRC
